Zimbabwe is located in the southern region of Africa and is bordered by Botswana, South Africa, Zambia, Mozambique, and Namibia. It has a total land area of approximately 390,757 square kilometers making it the 60th largest country in the world. The terrain of Zimbabwe consists mainly of high plateaus with some hills and mountains scattered throughout its territory. Its highest point is Mount Inyangani at 2,592 meters above sea level located in the Eastern Highlands. Its longest river is the Zambezi which runs for approximately 2175 kilometers before reaching its mouth near Mozambique’s Indian Ocean coast. Other major rivers include the Limpopo which runs for about 750 kilometers before emptying into South Africa’s Indian Ocean coast; Save which originates in Mozambique before emptying into Lake Kariba; and Shangani which runs for about 500 kilometers before reaching its mouth near Beitbridge on Zimbabwe’s border with South Africa. There are also several large lakes throughout Zimbabwe including Lake Kariba located on its border with Zambia; Lake Chivero located close to Harare; and Lake Mutirikwi located near Masvingo. The climate of Zimbabwe is mostly tropical with hot temperatures year-round and high levels of annual precipitation throughout most of its territory. Rainfall levels are generally higher along its eastern coastline compared to other parts of the country due to its proximity to Mozambique’s Indian Ocean coast.
