Zambia is located in the southern region of Africa and is bordered by Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Angola, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It has a total land area of approximately 752,618 square kilometers making it the 39th largest country in the world. The terrain of Zambia consists mainly of high plateaus with some hills and mountains scattered throughout its territory. Its highest point is Mafinga Central at 2109 meters above sea level located in the Muchinga Mountains. Its longest river is the Zambezi which runs for approximately 2175 kilometers before reaching its mouth near Mozambique’s Indian Ocean coast. Other major rivers include the Kafue which runs for about 900 kilometers before emptying into Lake Kariba; Luangwa which originates in Malawi before emptying into Lake Mweru; and Chambeshi which runs for about 500 kilometers before reaching its mouth near Nchelenge. There are also several large lakes throughout Zambia including Lake Tanganyika located on its border with Tanzania; Lake Mweru located close to Luapula Province; and Lake Bangweulu located near Kasama. The climate of Zambia is mostly tropical with hot temperatures year-round and high levels of annual precipitation throughout most of its territory. Rainfall levels are generally higher along its eastern coastline compared to other parts of the country due to its proximity to Mozambique’s Indian Ocean coast.
