Yemen is located in the Middle East region of Asia and is bordered by Saudi Arabia and Oman. It has a total land area of approximately 527,970 square kilometers, making it the second-largest country in the Arabian Peninsula. The terrain of Yemen consists mainly of desert and barren mountains, with some areas of fertile plains near its coastlines. Its highest point is Jabal An Nabi Shu’ayb at 3,666 meters above sea level located in the Sarawat Mountains. Its longest river is the Wadi Hadhramaut which runs for approximately 800 kilometers before reaching its mouth near Al Mukalla. Other major rivers include the Wadi Abyan which flows through southern Yemen before emptying into the Indian Ocean; Wadi Dhana which originates in Saudi Arabia before emptying into Gulf of Aden; and Wadi Khawlan which runs for about 500 kilometers before reaching its mouth near Aden. There are also several large lakes throughout Yemen including Lake Sa’eed located on its border with Saudi Arabia; Lake Bardawil located close to Sana’a; and Lake Jazirah located near Taiz. The climate of Yemen is mostly arid desert with hot temperatures year-round and low levels of annual precipitation throughout most of its territory.
