The United States is the third largest country in the world and is composed of 50 states, a federal district and various territories. It is bordered by Canada to the north, Mexico to the south, and the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean and Arctic Ocean to its east and west. The total land area of the US is approximately 9.8 million square kilometers. The terrain of the US varies significantly across regions with flat plains in the Midwest region; rolling hills in Appalachia; rocky mountain ranges in the West; and coastal lowlands along its various shorelines. The highest point in the US is Mount McKinley at 6,194 meters above sea level located in Alaska while its longest river is Missouri River at 4,039 kilometers long located primarily in Montana. Other major rivers include Mississippi River running through 10 states from Minnesota to Louisiana; Colorado River running through seven states from Wyoming to California; and Columbia River running through Oregon and Washington before reaching Canada’s border. There are also several large lakes throughout America including Lake Superior (Minnesota/Wisconsin/Michigan), Lake Michigan (Illinois/Indiana/Michigan) and Lake Huron (Michigan/Ontario). The climate of the US varies across regions but generally has a temperate climate with hot summers, cold winters and abundant rainfall throughout most of its territory.
