The United Kingdom is composed of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the North Sea on the other. The UK has a total land area of approximately 243,610 square kilometers, making it one of the smaller countries in Europe. The terrain of the UK is generally low-lying and consists mostly of hills, mountains and valleys. In England, there are areas of flatland such as East Anglia; while in Scotland there are rugged highlands and beautiful glens. Wales is known for its rolling hills and scenic mountain ranges; while Northern Ireland has dramatic coastline, rolling hills and rugged mountain ranges. The highest point in the UK is Ben Nevis at 1,345 meters above sea level located in Scotland. The longest river in Britain is River Severn which runs through England and Wales before flowing into the Bristol Channel near Wales’s border with England. Other major rivers include River Thames in England, River Clyde in Scotland and River Lagan in Northern Ireland. There are several lakes throughout Britain including Loch Lomond (Scotland), Windermere (England) and Lough Neagh (Northern Ireland).
