Thailand is located in Southeast Asia, bordered by Myanmar and Laos to the north, Cambodia to the east and Malaysia to the south. The country has a total land area of 513,120 square kilometers and a coastline of 3,219 km. Thailand is divided into four distinct regions: the central plain which is home to most of the population; the mountainous north which is known for its rugged terrain; the northeast which is mostly covered in rainforest; and the south which consists mainly of tropical beaches. The highest point in Thailand is Doi Inthanon at 2,565 meters above sea level. This mountain peak provides amazing views of the surrounding landscape and is a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers alike. The country also contains several large rivers such as the Chao Phraya River which flows through Bangkok and empties into the Gulf of Thailand. There are also several large lakes such as Lake Nong Khai near Udon Thani in northeastern Thailand. The climate in Thailand varies depending on location but generally consists of hot temperatures year-round with monsoons during certain times of year. The country experiences three seasons: hot season from March to May; rainy season from June to October; and cool season from November to February.
