Tanzania is located in East Africa, bordered to the north by Kenya and Uganda, to the west by Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo, to the south-west by Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique, and to the east by the Indian Ocean. The country has a total area of 945,087 square kilometers with a coastline of 1,424 km. Tanzania is divided into two major parts: mainland Tanzania on the African continent and Zanzibar Island off its coast. The mainland consists mainly of a high plateau ranging in altitude from 900 meters to over 2,500 meters above sea level. The highest point in Tanzania is Mount Kilimanjaro at 5,895 meters above sea level. This dormant volcano is one of Africa’s most iconic peaks and provides some stunning views from its summit. Tanzania also contains several large lakes such as Lake Victoria (the world’s second largest freshwater lake), Lake Tanganyika (the world’s longest freshwater lake), Lake Nyasa (also known as Lake Malawi) and Lake Rukwa. These lakes are home to many species of fish and other aquatic life such as hippos and crocodiles.
