Tajikistan is a landlocked country located in Central Asia, bordered by Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and China. It has a total area of 143,100 square kilometers and its capital city is Dushanbe. The geography of Tajikistan is mainly composed of mountain ranges such as the Pamir Mountains which run through the length of the country from north to south as well as several river valleys and lakes. The highest peak in Tajikistan is Ismoil Somoni Peak which stands at 7,495 meters above sea level. Other major mountain ranges include Zeravshan Range in the west and Gissar Range in the east. The country also has several rivers including Amu Darya River which flows from northern Tajikistan to Afghanistan as well as several lakes such as Karakul Lake. The climate of Tajikistan is mostly continental with temperatures ranging from -30°C to +40° C throughout most of the year. Rainfall varies throughout the year but tends to be higher during summer months (April to October) while winter months (November to March) tend to be drier with some regions experiencing little or no rainfall at all during this period. Tajikistan has a wide variety of flora and fauna due to its diverse terrain including species such as snow leopards, ibex wild sheeps, various bird species such as golden eagles and demoiselle cranes as well as amphibians like frogs and salamanders.
