Syria is a Middle Eastern country located in Southwest Asia and is bordered by Lebanon, Turkey, Iraq, Jordan and Israel. It has a total area of 185,180 square kilometers and its capital city is Damascus. The geography of Syria is mainly composed of the Syrian Desert in the northeast, the Anti-Lebanon Mountains in the west and northwest, and the Euphrates River which runs through central Syria. The highest mountain in Syria is Mount Hermon which stands at 2,814 meters above sea level. Other major mountain ranges include Jebel Druze range in the southwest and Taurus Mountains in the north. The country also has several rivers including Euphrates river which flows from Turkey to Iraq as well as several lakes such as Lake Assad. The climate of Syria is mostly dry with temperatures ranging from -10°C to 40° C throughout most of the year. Rainfall varies throughout the year but tends to be higher during winter months (November to March) while summer months (April to October) tend to be drier with some regions experiencing little or no rainfall at all during this period. Syria has a wide variety of flora and fauna due to its diverse terrain including species such as gazelle, ibex, various bird species such as vultures and eagles as well as amphibians like frogs and salamanders.
