Switzerland is a landlocked country located in Central Europe and is bordered by France, Germany, Austria, and Italy. It has a total area of 41,285 square kilometers and its capital city is Bern. The geography of Switzerland is mainly composed of the Swiss Alps in the south and south-east, the Jura Mountains in the northwest and the Central Plateau which covers most of the country. The highest mountain in Switzerland is Dufourspitze which stands at 4,634 meters above sea level. Other major mountain ranges include Pennine Alps in the east and Glarus Alps in the northeast. The country also has several rivers including Rhine river which flows from Lake Constance to North Sea. The climate of Switzerland is temperate with temperatures ranging from -10°C to 30° C throughout most of the year. Rainfall varies throughout the year but tends to be higher during summer months (May to September) while winter months (October to April) tend to be drier with some regions receiving little or no rainfall at all during this period. Switzerland has a wide variety of flora and fauna due to its diverse terrain including species such as ibex, chamois, various bird species such as alpine choughs and golden eagles as well as amphibians like newts and salamanders.
