Sudan is a country located in the northern part of Africa and is bordered by Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, South Sudan and Chad. It has a total area of 1,886,068 square kilometers and its capital city is Khartoum. The geography of Sudan is mainly composed of desert plains and semi-deserts in the north, savannas in the east and south as well as tropical forests in the west. The highest mountain in the country is Jebel Marra which stands at 3,042 meters above sea level. Other major mountain ranges include Red Sea Mountains in the east and Darfur Mountains in the west. The country also has several rivers including Nile River which flows from Uganda to Egypt. The climate of Sudan is mostly arid with temperatures ranging from 24°C to 41° C throughout most of the year. Rainfall varies throughout the year but tends to be higher during summer months while winter months tend to be drier with some regions receiving little or no rainfall at all during this period. Sudan has a wide variety of flora and fauna due to its diverse terrain including species such as cheetah, lion, leopard, gazelle, various bird species such as ostriches and vultures as well as amphibians like frogs and lizards.
