Sri Lanka is an island nation located in the Indian Ocean off the coast of India. It has a total area of 65,610 square kilometers and its capital city is Colombo. The geography of Sri Lanka is mainly composed of mountains, lowlands and coastal plains. The highest mountain in the country is Pidurutalagala which stands at 8,281 feet above sea level. Other major mountain ranges include Knuckles Range in the central region, Adam’s Peak in the south-west and Ritigala Range in the north-east. The country also has several rivers including Mahaweli River which runs from the central highlands to Trincomalee Bay and Kelani River which flows through Colombo. The climate of Sri Lanka is mostly tropical with temperatures ranging from 21°C to 33° C throughout most of the year. Rainfall varies throughout the year but tends to be higher during monsoon season (May to September) while dry season (October to April) tends to be drier with some parts receiving little or no rainfall at all during this period. Sri Lanka has a wide variety of flora and fauna due to its diverse terrain including species such as elephants, leopards, sloth bears, crocodiles, various bird species such as parrots, hornbills and peacocks as well as amphibians like frogs and lizards.
