Spain is a country located in the south-western corner of Europe, bordered by France, Portugal, Andorra and the Bay of Biscay to the north and east. It has a total area of 505,944 square kilometers and its capital city is Madrid. The geography of Spain is mainly composed of mountains, plateaus and plains. The Pyrenees mountain range runs along the border with France while the Cantabrian Mountains run along the northern coast. The plateau region in central Spain consists mainly of Meseta Central which covers most of Castilla-La Mancha and Castilla y Leon provinces. Other major mountain ranges include Sierra Nevada in the south, Sistema Ibérico in the northeast and Sistema Central in the center. Spain also has several rivers that run through its landscape including Ebro River which flows through Aragon province, Guadalquivir River which runs through Andalusia province and Duero River which flows through Galicia province. Other major rivers include Tajo River which runs through Castilla-La Mancha province, Segura River which flows through Murcia province and Minho River which runs along Portugal’s border with Spain. The climate of Spain is mostly Mediterranean with warm summers (average temperatures range from 18°C to 25° C) and mild winters (average temperatures range from 7°C to 14° C). Rainfall varies throughout the year but tends to be more frequent during winter months while summer months tend to be drier with some regions receiving little rainfall at all during this period. Spain has a wide variety of flora and fauna due to its diverse terrain including species such as deer, wild boar, foxes, wolves, lynx and various bird species such as eagles, storks and vultures.
