South Korea is a small, mountainous country located in the eastern part of Asia. It has a total area of 99,392 square kilometers and is bordered by North Korea to the north, China to the west and Japan to the east. Its capital city is Seoul. The geography of South Korea is mainly composed of high mountains, steep hills and narrow valleys. The country’s highest peak, Hallasan Mountain (1,950 meters), is located on Jeju Island off the southern coast. The majority of South Korea’s landmass consists of four main mountain ranges – Taebaek Mountains in the east, Sobaek Mountains in the west, Seorak Mountains in the northeast and Jirisan Mountains in the southwest – as well as several smaller mountain ranges such as Baekdudaegan Mountain Range and Chiri Mountain Range. South Korea also has several rivers that run through its landscape including Han River which flows through Seoul and Nakdong River which runs through Daegu City. Other major rivers include Geum River which runs through North Jeolla Province and Yeongsan River which flows through South Jeolla Province. The climate of South Korea is considered temperate with four distinct seasons: spring (March-May), summer (June-August), autumn (September-November) and winter (December-February). The spring season tends to be mild with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 18° C while summer temperatures range from 20°C to 25° C on average. During autumn temperatures drop slightly while winters are cold with temperatures dropping below freezing point at night. South Korea also has a wide variety of flora and fauna due to its diverse terrain including species such as deer, wild boar, leopards, tigers, bears and various bird species such as eagles, hawks and owls. Its forests are mainly composed of coniferous trees such as pine trees while deciduous trees like maple can also be found in some parts of the country.
