Somalia is a country located in the Horn of Africa, sharing borders with Ethiopia, Kenya, and Djibouti. The country has a total land area of 246,201 square miles and an estimated population of 15.44 million people. The geography of Somalia is characterized by its flat coastal plains which rise gradually to the rugged east African highlands in the interior of the country. These highlands are composed primarily of plateaus and low mountains with peaks reaching up to 2,000 meters above sea level. The region is covered with arid grasslands and sparsely vegetated savannas as well as scattered patches of deciduous forests in some areas. The coastline of Somalia is largely indented with several small bays and coves as well as several larger ports such as Mogadishu on the Benadir coast or Kismayo on the Jubba River delta. These ports provide access to some of the world’s busiest shipping lanes where vessels from around the world can dock for trade or refueling purposes. Additionally, these ports are home to thousands of traditional fishing boats which bring in catches from local waters such as tuna or mackerel for sale at local markets. Inland, Somalia features several large freshwater lakes such as Lake Victoria which provides a valuable source of water for many rural communities in northern Somalia. Additionally, there are numerous rivers flowing through Somalia including the Jubba River which is one of East Africa’s longest rivers measuring over 1,000 kilometers long before it empties into the Indian Ocean near Kismayo. Finally, there are numerous hot springs scattered throughout Somalia providing natural sources of thermal energy for many rural communities throughout the country.
