Romania is a south-eastern European country located in the Carpathian Basin and bordered by Bulgaria, Ukraine, Hungary, Serbia, and Moldova. Romania has an area of 238,391 square kilometers making it slightly smaller than the United Kingdom. The topography of Romania is mainly made up of mountains and hills with the Carpathian Mountains running across the center of the country. The highest point in Romania is Moldoveanu Peak at 2,544 meters above sea level located in Fagaras Mountains. There are several major rivers running through Romania such as the Danube River which forms part of its southern border with Bulgaria. The climate in Romania is temperate-continental with hot summers and cold winters; temperatures range from 5-25°C throughout the year with precipitation levels varying from region to region depending on altitude. Annual rainfall ranges from 600 mm in coastal areas up to 1,000 mm inland. There are four distinct seasons: a mild spring (March-May), a hot summer (June-August), a cool autumn (September-November), and a cold winter (December-February). During these four periods, various parts of Romania experience different levels of rainfall which gives rise to diverse vegetation types across the country ranging from deciduous forests to grasslands and alpine meadows.
