Peru is a country located in western South America, bordered by Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Bolivia and Chile. It is known for its diverse geography which consists of several distinct regions including the Coast, Mountains and Amazon Rainforest. The Coast region makes up most of Peru’s landmass and is characterized by a narrow strip of desert coastline along the Pacific Ocean. This area has some of the world’s driest deserts and contains many ancient ruins such as those at Machu Picchu. It also has some areas with lush vegetation along its rivers where there are many species of wildlife including llamas, alpacas and vicuñas. The Mountains region is located in the central part of Peru and consists mostly of high mountains with some areas having higher elevations up to 6,000 meters above sea level. This area has a temperate climate with temperatures ranging from 10-20 degrees Celsius throughout the year. It also contains some marshy wetlands that are home to a variety of aquatic life such as caimans, turtles and fish. The Amazon Rainforest region is located in the eastern part of Peru and consists mostly of dense tropical rainforest with some areas having higher elevations up to 1,000 meters above sea level. This area has a humid climate with temperatures ranging from 20-30 degrees Celsius throughout the year. It also contains many rivers such as the Amazon river which forms part of its eastern border with Brazil as well as many smaller rivers that contain abundant wildlife including jaguars, monkeys and sloths.
