Niger is a landlocked country located in the Sahel region of West Africa. It covers an area of approximately 1,267,000 square kilometers and has an estimated population of around 20 million people. The terrain in Niger is mainly desert with some semi-arid areas towards the north and south. The highest point in the country is Mont Idoukal-n-Taghès which stands at 622 meters above sea level while Lake Chad is the largest lake in Niger with an area of around 25,000 square kilometers. The climate in Niger is mostly hot and dry with temperatures reaching as high as 45°C during the summer months. Agriculture is an important part of Niger’s economy with crops such as millet, sorghum, cassava and peanuts being grown for both domestic consumption and export. Livestock farming also plays an important role in Niger’s economy with cattle, sheep, goats and camels being reared for their meat, milk and hides. Tourism is another major industry for Niger due to its stunning landscapes which include sand dunes, grassy plains, rocky hillsides and gorges such as Termit Massif National Park which offers visitors a chance to explore its unique rock formations or visit traditional villages such as Agadez which has ancient mosques and mud brick homes.
