Nepal is a small landlocked country located in the Himalayan region of South Asia, with an area of approximately 147,181 square kilometers. It is bordered by India to the east, south and west and by China to the north. The terrain is mostly mountainous with eight of the world’s highest peaks located within its borders. The country’s highest point is Mount Everest at 8,848 meters above sea level. Nepal also has several major rivers including the Koshi, Narayani and Karnali rivers which are important for irrigation and transportation. The climate in Nepal varies depending on altitude but generally ranges from tropical in the lowlands to arctic in the high mountains with temperatures dropping as low as -20°C at higher altitudes. The majority of Nepal is covered by forests which are home to a variety of flora and fauna including tigers, rhinoceroses and elephants. There are also numerous national parks throughout Nepal such as Chitwan National Park and Bardia National Park which protect endangered species such as snow leopards, Bengal tigers and red pandas. Agriculture is an important part of Nepalese economy with rice being one of its main crops along with wheat, maize and millet. Tourism is also an important industry for Nepal due to its stunning mountain scenery and diverse culture which attracts many visitors each year from around the world.
