Myanmar is a Southeast Asian country located in the Bay of Bengal, bordered by Bangladesh, India, China and Laos. It has an area of 676,578 square kilometers making it the 40th largest country in the world. Myanmar’s terrain is mostly mountainous with several peaks over 2000 meters above sea level. The highest point in Myanmar is Hkakabo Razi at 5881 meters above sea level. The climate in Myanmar can be described as tropical with average temperatures ranging from 19°C in January to 33°C in June. Rainfall typically occurs between May and October but can vary significantly from year to year. The rainy season commonly lasts from June to September when cyclones and floods may occur. The main river flowing through Myanmar is the Irrawaddy which forms part of its eastern border with India and Bangladesh. There are also several smaller rivers such as Chindwin, Salween and Sittaung that flow through parts of Myanmar’s interior regions.
