Monaco is a small independent city-state located in Western Europe, bordered by France and the Mediterranean Sea. It has an area of 2.02 square kilometers making it one of the smallest countries in the world. Monaco’s terrain is very hilly and mountainous with several peaks over 500 meters above sea level. The highest point in Monaco is Mont Agel at 499 meters above sea level. The climate in Monaco can be described as Mediterranean with average temperatures ranging from 8°C in January to 24°C in July. Rainfall typically occurs between October and April but can vary significantly from year to year. Snowfall rarely occurs during the winter months but can happen occasionally on higher elevations near the Italian border. The main river flowing through Monaco is the Roia which flows into Menton Bay near Roquebrune-Cap-Martin at its westernmost tip. There are also several smaller rivers such as Fontvieille River, Carenage River, and Grimaldi River that flow through parts of Monaco’s interior regions.
