Mauritius is an island nation located in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Madagascar. It is composed of two main islands, Mauritius and Rodrigues, with a total area of 1,865 square kilometers. The islands are surrounded by coral reefs and have a rugged coastline with many bays and lagoons. The highest point on Mauritius is Piton de la Petite Riviere Noire which stands at 828 meters above sea level. The climate in Mauritius can be described as tropical with average temperatures ranging from 20°C in July to 28°C in January. Rainfall typically occurs between October and April but can vary significantly from year to year. Cyclones are common during the summer months and can cause significant damage on the island’s infrastructure. The main river flowing through Mauritius is the Grand River South East which flows through the center of the island into Tamarin Bay near Port Louis. There are also several smaller rivers such as La Chaux, La Ferme, La Hogue and La Vigie that flow through parts of Mauritius’ interior regions.
