Malaysia is a tropical country located in Southeast Asia, with a population of around 31 million people. It is divided into two regions, Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia, which are separated by the South China Sea. Peninsular Malaysia consists of 11 states and three federal territories while East Malaysia consists of two states and one federal territory. The capital city is Kuala Lumpur, located in the western region of Peninsular Malaysia. The country is known for its diverse geography consisting largely of mountains, rainforest and coastal plains. The highest peak in the country is Mount Kinabalu which rises up to 4,095 meters (13,435 feet) above sea level on the island of Borneo in East Malaysia. Additionally, there are several national parks such as Taman Negara National Park which contains some of the oldest rainforest in the world. The coastal plains feature some stunning beaches including Langkawi Island which is known for its crystal clear waters perfect for swimming or snorkeling. Malaysia also features several rivers including the Pahang River which runs through the middle of Peninsular Malaysia and empties into the South China Sea at Kuala Rompin. Additionally, there are numerous lakes such as Tasik Chini Lake located in Pahang which makes for a great spot for fishing or boating activities. Lastly, there are several islands off the coast such as Tioman Island which offer some stunning views and activities such as scuba diving or snorkeling amongst its coral reefs.
