Madagascar is an island nation located off the eastern coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean. The country is divided into 22 provinces and has a population of around 26 million people. Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world and features both tropical rainforest and desert regions. The highest point in Madagascar is Maromokotro at 2,876 meters (9,436 feet) above sea level. The majority of Madagascar’s landmass is comprised of plateaus, mountains, and hills, with plains making up less than 20%. The central highlands are home to some of the most beautiful landscapes on the island with several national parks such as Ranomafana National Park and Isalo National Park. These parks are home to hundreds of endemic species such as lemurs, chameleons, frogs, birds and reptiles that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. The western coast features some of the best beaches on the island with crystal clear waters perfect for swimming or snorkeling. Further south lies Tsingy de Bemaraha Strict Nature Reserve which consists of limestone formations carved out by rivers over thousands of years creating stunning gorges and canyons.
