Lebanon is a country located in the Middle East, bordered by Syria, Israel and the Mediterranean Sea. It has an area of 10,452 km2 and a population of 5.9 million people. The geography of Lebanon is mostly mountainous with some flat plains in the south and along the coastline. The most prominent feature is Mount Lebanon which covers much of the country’s eastern border and reaches a height of 3,088 m above sea level. The climate in Lebanon is Mediterranean with hot summers and mild winters. Average temperatures range from 7°C in January to 30°C in August while average rainfall ranges from 500-750mm per year with most precipitation occurring between November-March. The natural resources of Lebanon include minerals such as iron ore, limestone, clay and marble as well as significant deposits of oil and gas. In addition to this, there are also significant agricultural resources such as arable land (10% of total land area) which are used for growing grains, vegetables, fruits etc., as well as livestock rearing which is an important source of income for many rural communities.
