Laos is a landlocked country located in Southeast Asia, bordered by Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and China. It has an area of 236,800 km2 and a population of 6.9 million people. The geography of Laos is mostly mountainous with some flat plains in the north and south parts of the country. The most prominent feature is the Annamite Range which covers much of Laos’ northern and eastern borders. The highest peak is Phou Bia at 2,820 m above sea level. The climate in Laos is tropical with warm summers and mild winters. Average temperatures range from 22°C in January to 33°C in April/May while average rainfall ranges from 1,500-2,500mm per year with most precipitation occurring between May-October. The natural resources of Laos include minerals such as copper, gold and zinc as well as significant deposits of oil and gas. In addition to this, there are also significant agricultural resources such as arable land (12% of total land area) which are used for growing grains, vegetables, fruits etc., as well as livestock rearing which is an important source of income for many rural communities.
