Kyrgyzstan is a landlocked country located in Central Asia, bordered by Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and China. It has an area of 199,951 km2 and a population of 6.3 million people. The geography of Kyrgyzstan is mostly mountainous with some flat plains in the north and south parts of the country. The most prominent feature is the Tian Shan mountain range which covers much of Kyrgyzstan’s northern and eastern borders. The highest peak is Jengish Chokusu (Victory Peak) at 7,439 m above sea level. The climate in Kyrgyzstan is continental with warm summers and cold winters. Average temperatures range from -13°C in January to 26°C in July/August while average rainfall ranges from 200-400mm per year with most precipitation occurring between May-September. The natural resources of Kyrgyzstan include minerals such as gold, coal, iron ore and uranium as well as significant deposits of oil and gas. In addition to this, there are also significant agricultural resources such as arable land (17% of total land area) which are used for growing grains, vegetables, fruits etc., as well as livestock rearing which is an important source of income for many rural communities.
