Kazakhstan is the largest landlocked country in the world, located in Central Asia. It covers an area of 2,717,300 square kilometers and is bordered by Russia, China, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and the Caspian Sea. The terrain of Kazakhstan is mostly flat steppe land that stretches from the Volga River in the west to the Altai Mountains in the east. The country’s topography includes mountains in the east and south-east such as Tien Shan and Altai ranges as well as hills and lowlands throughout. The highest point is Khan Tengri at 6995 meters above sea level while Lake Balkhash is Kazakhstan’s largest lake at 16500 square kilometers. Kazakhstan has a continental climate with hot summers (up to 40°C) and cold winters (down to -20°C). Rainfall occurs mainly during spring and summer months while snow can be expected throughout much of winter. The country has a number of rivers including Irtysh, Ishim, Ural and Syr Darya which flow into major bodies of water such as Caspian Sea or Aral Sea. The natural resources of Kazakhstan include oil and natural gas reserves along with significant deposits of uranium, coal, copper and zinc. Other resources include timber which can be found in abundance due to its extensive forested areas as well as hydroelectric power generated by its rivers.
