Jordan is an Arab nation located in the Middle East, bordered by Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Israel. It is part of the Fertile Crescent region and lies at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa. Jordan has a total land area of around 89,342 square kilometers and consists largely of desert land. It is characterized by its rolling hills, fertile plains and deep valleys. The main geographical feature of Jordan is the Jordan River which flows south from Syria to the Dead Sea before emptying into the Gulf of Aqaba. The river provides much-needed water for both agriculture and industry in the region. The Jordan Valley runs along this river from north to south and is considered one of Jordan’s most important agricultural regions due to its fertility. Other major rivers include Yarmouk River which forms part of the border between Syria and Jordan, Zarqa River which flows through Amman and Wadi Araba which divides Jordan from Saudi Arabia. The landscape in Jordan varies greatly with some areas featuring mountainous terrain while others are covered in sand dunes or flat plains. The highest point in the country is Jabal Umm ad Dami at 1,854 meters above sea level while the lowest point is at -400 meters below sea level at Dead Sea shoreline. Jordan has a semi-arid climate with hot summers and cold winters that can reach temperatures as low as -10 degrees Celsius in some areas. Rainfall occurs mainly during winter months with snowfall occurring occasionally in higher elevations such as Mount Hermon near Damascus or Mount Nebo near Madaba.
