Japan is an archipelago of 6,852 islands located in East Asia, between the Sea of Japan and the North Pacific Ocean. It lies to the east of the Korean Peninsula and China, and stretches from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea and Taiwan in the south. The four main islands are Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. The Ryukyu Islands to the southwest are also part of Japan. Mount Fuji is one of Japan’s most famous landmarks and is located on Honshu Island. The landscape of Japan is incredibly diverse with over 70% being mountainous terrain. There are over 200 active volcanoes in Japan with 17 being considered particularly dangerous. The country has many hot springs which are popular tourist attractions as well as more than 3,000 rivers and countless lakes. In addition to its mountains and volcanoes, Japan has extensive plains suitable for agriculture as well as beaches along its coasts.
