Israel is a relatively small country located in the Middle East, bordered by Lebanon to the north, Syria to the northeast, Jordan and the West Bank to the east, Egypt and the Gaza Strip to the southwest, and the Mediterranean Sea to the west. Israel’s geography is characterized by its diverse terrain that ranges from coastal plains in its western regions to mountains and deserts in its eastern regions. The coastal plains of Israel are located along its western border with the Mediterranean Sea. This region is mostly flat with some low hills and terraces formed by rivers flowing down from mountains further inland. Along this coastline lies many of Israel’s major cities including Tel Aviv, Haifa, and Ashdod. The central region of Israel is home to several mountain ranges including Mount Meron (the highest peak at 1208 meters above sea level), Mount Gilboa (879 meters), Mount Carmel (579 meters), and Mount Hebron (1118 meters). These mountains form a natural barrier between northern and southern Israel as well as providing protection from strong winds coming in from the Mediterranean Sea. The Jordan River valley also runs through this region providing much-needed water for agriculture in this otherwise arid environment. The southern region of Israel consists mainly of desert terrain including parts of both the Negev Desert and Judean Desert. This area receives very little rainfall making it one of the driest places on earth but also provides an ideal environment for certain species of wildlife such as gazelles, ibexes, hyenas, foxes, lizards and snakes which inhabit this region. Finally, Israel’s eastern border consists mainly of highlands which form part of both Syria’s Anti-Lebanon mountain range as well as Jordan’s East Bank highlands. These highlands provide an important natural barrier between these two countries as well as providing an ideal environment for certain species such as ibexes which inhabit these areas. Overall, Israel’s geography is characterized by its diverse terrain ranging from coastal plains in its western regions to mountains and deserts in its eastern regions making it an interesting place for tourists looking for adventure or relaxation away from it all!
