Iran is a country located in the Middle East and Southwest Asia. It has a total area of 1,648,195 sq km and is bordered by seven countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq and Turkey. Iran has a diverse geography with various landforms ranging from high mountains to desert plains. The Zagros Mountains are the most prominent mountain range in Iran. They stretch from the northwest to southeast of the country and form part of the western border with Iraq. The highest peak in this range is Mount Damavand at 5609m above sea level. This mountain range contains many other peaks over 4000m in altitude including Alam Kooh (4850m) and Sabalan (4811m). The Alborz Mountains are located to the north of Tehran and form part of the southern Caspian Sea coastline. The highest peak in this range is Mount Damavand at 5610m above sea level. The Persian Gulf is situated along Iran’s southern coastline and covers an area of around 23300 sq km. This gulf serves as an important waterway for trade between countries such as Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. The Caspian Sea lies to the north of Iran with an area of around 438000 sq km making it one of the largest inland bodies of water in the world. Iran also has numerous deserts within its borders such as Dasht-e Kavir which covers an area of around 77000 sq km making it one of the biggest deserts on Earth. Other notable deserts include Dasht-e Lut which covers an area of around 51000 sq km and Maranjab Desert located on the northern shoreline along the Caspian Sea which covers an area of around 15000 sq km. In addition to these landforms Iran also has numerous rivers that traverse through its landscape such as Karun River which flows into Shatt al-Arab near Basra in Iraq or Zayandeh River which flows through Isfahan city before draining into Gavkhouni wetland near Shiraz city in central Iran. Overall, Iran’s geography is incredibly diverse ranging from high mountains to desert plains with numerous rivers traversing through its landscape providing life for its inhabitants while serving as important waterways for trade between neighbouring countries making it an interesting place for tourists looking for adventure or relaxation away from it all!
