India has a total area of 3,287,263 square kilometers and is bordered by Afghanistan to the northwest, China to the northeast, Nepal and Bhutan to the north, and Bangladesh and Myanmar to the east. The Arabian Sea lies to its west while the Bay of Bengal lies to its east. India is divided into 29 states and 7 union territories. Geographically, India can be divided into four major regions: The Great Himalayas in the north; The Indo-Gangetic Plain in the north; The Deccan Plateau in the south; and The Coastal Plains along both sides of India’s coastlines. The Great Himalayas are located in northern India along its border with Tibet. It includes some of Earth’s highest mountains like Mount Everest (8,848 meters), Kanchenjunga (8,598 meters), Nanga Parbat (8,126 meters) etc., which are snowcapped throughout most of their heights. The Indo-Gangetic Plain stretches from Pakistan through northern India up to West Bengal. This plain has very fertile soil due to deposits brought down by numerous rivers that flow through it such as Ganges River (2,525 km long), Brahmaputra River (2,900 km long) etc., making it one of Earth’s most agriculturally productive regions. The Deccan Plateau lies south of Indo-Gangetic Plain and covers most parts of South India. It is a highland plateau with an average elevation between 500 m – 1 km above sea level. It is home to some of Earth’s oldest rocks and mountain ranges like Western Ghats which runs parallel along its western coast line stretching from Gujarat up to Tamil Nadu while Eastern Ghats run parallel along its eastern coast line stretching from Odisha up to Tamil Nadu forming one large plateau known as Deccan Plateau or Peninsular Plateau. The Coastal Plains lie on both sides of Indian subcontinent stretching from Saurashtra Peninsula on western side up until Rann Of Kutch on eastern side making it world’s longest coastline at 7500 km long with numerous bays such as Kori Creek Bay & Chilika Lake Bay on western side & Hooghly River Estuary & Mahanadi Delta on eastern side respectively along with many other smaller creeks & estuaries all around Indian coastline that provide significant economic benefits for local communities living around them through fishing & tourism activities respectively.
