Honduras is located in Central America and bordered by Nicaragua to the north, Guatemala to the west, El Salvador to the southwest, and the Caribbean Sea to the east. It has an area of 112,492 square kilometers (43,433 square miles) and is divided into 18 departments. The topography of Honduras is mostly mountainous with narrow coastal plains and valleys. The highest peak is Cerro Las Minas at 2,870 meters (9,418 feet) above sea level. The mountain ranges are divided by fertile valleys and plateaus. Most of Honduras’ land has been deforested due to extensive logging activities making it vulnerable to soil erosion and landslides during heavy rains. Honduras’ climate consists of two distinct seasons: a wet season from May to October and a dry season from November to April. Average annual temperature ranges from 25°C (77°F) in the lowlands to 15°C (59°F) in higher elevations. Rainfall varies from region to region but generally decreases from east to west; areas along the coast receive more rainfall than those in higher elevations inland. Honduras has numerous rivers that flow through its territory including Ulua River which originates in the highlands before flowing into Caribbean Sea near La Ceiba; Aguan River which forms a large delta near Tocoa before emptying into Caribbean Sea; and Patuca River which flows through Olancho department before emptying into Caribbean Sea near La Mosquitia region. Additionally there are numerous bays along its coastline providing important resources for fishing communities living along coastlines such as Amatique Bay off Guatemala border or Bahia de Tela near Tela city on northern Honduran coast.
