Haiti is located in the Caribbean and shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic. It is situated on the western third of Hispaniola, which lies between Cuba and Puerto Rico. Haiti occupies an area of 27,750 square kilometers (10,714 square miles). The country is divided into ten departments, which are further divided into arrondissements and communes. The topography of Haiti is mostly mountainous with a narrow coastal plain. The highest peak is Pic la Selle at 2,680 meters (8,793 feet) above sea level. The mountain ranges are separated by fertile valleys and plateaus. Much of Haiti’s land has been deforested due to extensive logging activities, making it vulnerable to soil erosion and landslides during heavy rains. Haiti’s climate consists of two distinct seasons: a wet season from April to June and a dry season from November to February. Average annual temperature ranges from 23°C (73°F) in the lowlands to 19°C (66°F) in the highlands. Rainfall varies from region to region but generally decreases from east to west; areas along the coast receive more rainfall than those in higher elevations inland. Haiti has numerous rivers that flow through its territory. Most rivers originate in the mountains and flow toward either the Caribbean Sea or Atlantic Ocean; however some rivers also form inland lakes like Etang Saumâtre in central Haiti before emptying into other nearby bodies of water like Lake Azueï on Haiti’s southern border with Dominican Republic. Additionally, there are numerous bays along its coastline providing important resources for fishing communities living along coastlines such as La Gonâve Bay near Port-au-Prince or Coteaux Bay near Les Cayes in southwestern Haiti.
