Greece is a Mediterranean country located on the southern tip of the Balkan Peninsula, bordered by Albania, Macedonia and Bulgaria. It has a total land area of 131,957 square kilometers which consists of mainland Greece and several offshore islands. The terrain of Greece is mainly mountainous with its highest point being Mount Olympus at 2,917 meters above sea level. The majority of Greece’s population lives in urban areas such as Athens, Thessaloniki and Patras. The climate in Greece is Mediterranean with temperatures ranging from 7°C during winter months (Dec-Feb) to around 30°C during summer months (Jun-Aug). Rainfall varies across different parts with wetter areas receiving up to 1,000mm annually while drier areas receive around 500mm each year. Greece is known for its lush forests which covers approximately one third of its total land area. This includes numerous rivers and lakes which are home to a wide variety of wildlife including foxes, wolves and wild boars. There are also over 400 species of birds found in Greece including some rare species such as black vultures and pygmy cormorants.
