Ghana is a West African country located on the Gulf of Guinea, bordered by Cote d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso and Togo. It has a total land area of 238,535 square kilometers which consists of mainland Ghana and several offshore islands. The terrain of Ghana is mainly low-lying plains with its highest point being Mount Afadjato at 885 meters above sea level. The majority of Ghana’s population lives in urban areas such as Accra, Kumasi and Tamale. The climate in Ghana is tropical with temperatures ranging from 16°C during winter months (Dec-Feb) to around 30°C during summer months (Jun-Aug). Rainfall varies across different parts with wetter areas receiving up to 2,500mm annually while drier areas receive around 1,000mm each year. Ghana is known for its lush rainforests which covers approximately two thirds of its total land area. This includes numerous rivers and waterfalls which are home to a wide variety of wildlife including monkeys, antelopes and elephants. There are also over 500 species of birds found in Ghana including some rare species such as white-necked rockfowls and black scrub robins.
