Germany is a large country located in the Central and Western Europe, bordered by France, Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Poland and Austria. It has a total land area of 357,386 square kilometers which consists of mainland Germany and several offshore islands. The terrain of Germany is mainly rolling hills with its highest point being the Zugspitze at 2,962 meters above sea level. The majority of Germany’s population lives in urban areas such as Berlin, Hamburg and Munich. The climate in Germany is temperate with temperatures ranging from -2°C during winter months (Dec-Feb) to around 25°C during summer months (Jun-Aug). Rainfall varies across different parts with wetter areas receiving up to 1,000mm annually while drier areas receive around 500mm each year. Germany is known for its lush forests which covers approximately one third of its total land area. This includes numerous rivers and lakes which are home to a wide variety of wildlife including beavers, otters and deer. There are also over 400 species of birds found in Germany including some rare species such as black storks and white-tailed eagles.
