Georgia is a small country located in the Caucasus region of Eurasia, bordered by Russia to the north, Turkey and Armenia to the south, Azerbaijan to the east and the Black Sea to the west. It has a total land area of 69,700 square kilometers which consists of mainland Georgia and several offshore islands. The terrain of Georgia is mostly mountainous with its highest point being Mount Shkhara at 5,068 meters above sea level. The majority of Georgia’s population lives in urban areas such as Tbilisi, Kutaisi and Batumi. The climate in Georgia is temperate with temperatures ranging from -2°C during winter months (Dec-Feb) to around 30°C during summer months (Jun-Aug). Rainfall varies across different parts with wetter areas receiving up to 1,500mm annually while drier areas receive around 500mm each year. Georgia is known for its majestic mountains which covers approximately 50% of its total land area. This includes numerous glaciers, valleys and alpine meadows which are home to a wide variety of wildlife including wolves, bears and lynxes. There are also over 400 species of birds found in Georgia including some rare species such as Caucasian snowcock and black francolin.
