Gambia is a small, narrow country located in West Africa, bordered by Senegal to the north, east and south. It has a total land area of 11,295 square kilometers which consists of mainland Gambia and several offshore islands. The terrain of Gambia is mostly low-lying plains with some hills and its highest point being an unnamed location at 53 meters above sea level. The majority of Gambia’s population lives in rural areas along the banks of the River Gambia. The climate in Gambia is tropical with temperatures ranging from 18°C during winter months (Dec-Feb) to around 35°C during summer months (Jun-Aug). Rainfall varies across different parts with wetter areas receiving up to 1,500mm annually while drier areas receive around 500mm each year. Gambia is known for its lush mangrove swamps which covers approximately 40% of its total land area. This includes numerous rivers and lagoons which are home to a wide variety of wildlife including crocodiles, hippos and monkeys. There are also over 250 species of birds found in Gambia including some rare species such as white-faced scops owls and black kites.
