France is a country located in Western Europe, bordered by Spain to the south, Germany to the east, Belgium and Luxembourg to the northeast and Italy to the southeast. It has a total land area of 643,801 square kilometers which consists of metropolitan France in addition to various overseas territories. The terrain of France is mostly flat with some low hills and its highest point being Mont Blanc at 4,808 meters above sea level. The majority of France’s population lives in the north and south of the country in urban areas such as Paris, Marseille and Lyon. The climate in France is temperate with temperatures ranging from -3°C during winter months (Dec-Feb) to around 25°C during summer months (Jun-Aug). Rainfall varies across different parts with wetter areas receiving up to 1,000mm annually while drier areas receive around 600mm each year. France is renowned for its vast countryside which covers approximately 60% of its total land area. This includes numerous forests, rivers and mountain ranges which are home to a wide variety of wildlife including deer, wild boar, foxes and badgers. There are also over 400 species of birds found in France including some rare species such as black storks and golden orioles.
