Fiji is an archipelago of over 300 islands located in the South Pacific Ocean. It lies about 2,000 km northeast of New Zealand and east of Australia. The two main islands are Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, which account for around 87% of the total land area. Viti Levu is the largest island and home to the capital city, Suva, as well as most of the population. The terrain is generally mountainous with peaks rising up to 1,300 meters above sea level. The highest peak is Mount Tomanivi on Viti Levu at 1,324 meters above sea level. The majority of Fiji’s population lives on the coast in villages or towns where fishing and other coastal activities are important sources of income. Fiji also has a significant number of lagoons and coral reefs that form part of its coastline. These coral reefs are home to a wide variety of marine life including tropical fish, turtles, dolphins and whales. In addition to the varied marine life there are also over 900 species of birds found in Fiji including some rare species such as parrots, hawks and owls. There are also many endemic plant species such as ferns, palms and orchids that are found only in Fiji’s rainforests. The climate in Fiji is tropical with temperatures ranging from 24°C-31°C throughout the year but can be higher during summer months (Nov-Feb). Rainfall varies across different parts with wetter areas receiving up to 3 meters annually while drier areas receive around 1 meter each year. Check andyeducation for Fiji School and Education.
