Eritrea is a country located in the Horn of Africa, bordered by Sudan to the west, Ethiopia to the south, and Djibouti to the east. It has a total land area of 117,600 square kilometers and a population of over 5 million people. The capital city of Eritrea is Asmara which is located in central Eritrea close to the border with Ethiopia. The physical geography of Eritrea is characterized by its arid desert climate with hot summers and mild winters. The landscape consists mainly of high plateau regions throughout its interior while its coastline consists mainly of sandy beaches along its Red Sea shoreline. Its highest peak is Emba Soira which stands at 3018 meters above sea level while its lowest point is at sea level along its coastline. The coastline of Eritrea consists mainly of sandy beaches along its northern shoreline while its southern shoreline consists mainly of coral reefs and lagoons. There are several large rivers which run through the country including Barka River near Kassala, Anseba River near Keren, and Gash River near Mendefera while Lake Tsorona to the north is one of its largest lakes at over 200 square kilometers in size.
