The Dominican Republic is a Caribbean nation located between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, bordered by Haiti to the west and Puerto Rico to the east. It has a total land area of 48,671 square kilometers and a population of over 10.5 million people. The capital city of Dominican Republic is Santo Domingo which is located on the south coast of the island. The physical geography of Dominican Republic is characterized by its tropical climate with warm temperatures throughout the year and plenty of rainfall. The landscape consists mainly of mountainous terrain with some lowland areas in the north and east. Its highest peak is Pico Duarte which stands at 3175 meters above sea level while its lowest point is at sea level along its coastline. The coastline of Dominican Republic consists mainly of rocky cliffs and sandy beaches along its Caribbean Sea shoreline while its Atlantic Ocean shoreline consists mainly of coral reefs and lagoons. There are several small rivers which run through the country including Yaque del Norte River in Santiago de los Caballeros, Ozama River in Santo Domingo, and Yuna River near Samana Bay while Lake Enriquillo to the west is one of its largest lakes at over 250 square kilometers in size.
