Djibouti is a small country located in the Horn of Africa, bordered by Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Somalia. It has a total land area of 23,200 square kilometers and a population of over 942,000 people. The capital city of Djibouti is also called Djibouti which is located on the Gulf of Tadjoura. The physical geography of Djibouti is characterized by its arid desert climate with hot and dry summers and mild winters. The country experiences little to no rainfall throughout the year with most areas receiving less than 200mm per year. The landscape consists mainly of barren desert plains with some scattered hills in the north and northwest as well as some high mountain peaks in the south including Mousa Ali which stands at 2185 meters above sea level. The coastline of Djibouti consists mainly of rocky cliffs and sandy beaches along its Red Sea shoreline while its Gulf of Tadjoura shoreline consists mainly of coral reefs and lagoons. There are several small rivers which run through the country including Wadi Daouah, Wadi Ghoubbet, and Wadi Issa while Lake Abbe to the east is one of its largest lakes at over 100 square kilometers in size. Additionally, Djibouti’s landscape features several volcanic mountains such as Ardoukoba volcano which stands at 2177 meters above sea level as well as numerous hot springs throughout the country.
