Denmark is a small country located in Northern Europe, bordering Germany and Sweden. The country is made up of the Jutland Peninsula and the surrounding islands. Denmark has a total land area of 42,924 square kilometers and a population of over 5.8 million people. The country is divided into five regions: Zealand, Funen, Jutland, Lolland-Falster-Møn, and Bornholm. The capital city of Denmark is Copenhagen which is located on the island of Zealand. The physical geography of Denmark is characterized by its low lying terrain with flat plains and rolling hills throughout the entire country. It has a temperate climate with mild winters and cool summers. The coastal areas are particularly mild due to the influence of the North Sea while inland areas experience colder temperatures during winter months. One of Denmark’s most iconic features is its extensive coastline which stretches for over 7300 kilometers with an abundance of beaches and islands to explore. There are also several small rivers which run through the country including Gudenå River in Jutland and Skelmo River in Zealand. Additionally, Denmark’s landscape features numerous lakes including Lake Arresø on Zealand Island which is one of Europe’s largest freshwater lakes at over 55 square kilometers in size.
