Cuba is an island country located in the Caribbean Sea. It is situated between the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico to the south and east, and the North Atlantic Ocean to the north. The island is approximately 790 miles long and 110 miles wide, making it one of the largest islands in the region. Cuba has a tropical climate, with temperatures ranging from 22-31 degrees Celsius throughout most of the year. It has a diverse landscape, with mountain ranges in its central region, plains in its eastern portion and marshlands along its western coast. The highest point on the island is Pico Turquino at 6500 feet above sea level. Cuba also has numerous lakes and rivers throughout its interior, as well as several small islands off its coast. The island is home to a variety of flora and fauna, including mangroves, cacti, palm trees, parrots and iguanas. To protect these natural resources Cuba has established many national parks such as Ciénaga de Zapata National Park which is home to some of Cuba’s most endangered species like Cuban crocodiles. Additionally, much of Cuba’s coastline consists of coral reefs which are important for local fishing communities as well as providing habitat for marine life such as sea turtles.
