Costa Rica is a small Central American nation located between Nicaragua and Panama. Its total area is just over 51,000 square kilometers (19,700 sq mi), making it the second-smallest country in Central America after El Salvador. The country is divided into seven provinces and 81 cantons. Costa Rica’s terrain consists of coastal plains, volcanic mountain ranges, and plateaus. The Caribbean coast of Costa Rica is mostly low-lying with several small islands dotting the coastline. There are several lagoons and estuaries along this coast which provide excellent habitats for various species of animals including manatees, dolphins, and sea turtles. The Pacific coast of Costa Rica is generally more rugged with rocky cliffs and sandy beaches along certain parts of the shoreline. The central part of Costa Rica contains most of its mountain ranges as well as several volcanoes including the active Arenal Volcano which stands at 1,670 meters (5,480 ft) above sea level. The highest point in the country is Cerro Chirripó which stands at 3,819 meters (12,530 ft) above sea level making it the highest peak in Central America. Other notable mountains include Cerro de la Muerte (3,491 m or 11,452 ft) and Irazú Volcano (3,432 m or 11,260 ft). The central part of Costa Rica also contains several plateaus such as the Valle Central which lies between two mountain ranges – Cordillera de Talamanca to the south and Cordillera Central to the north – as well as numerous smaller plateaus scattered throughout this region. The northern parts of Costa Rica contain mostly flatlands with some low hills making up much of its terrain while its southern parts are mostly mountainous with some lowland areas near its border with Panama. Overall Costa Rica has an incredibly diverse geography ranging from its lush rainforests to its soaring mountains providing plenty of opportunities for nature lovers looking to explore this beautiful part of Central America.
