Colombia is a country located in the northwest corner of South America and is bordered by Panama to the northwest, Venezuela to the east, Brazil to the south and Ecuador and Peru to the south. Colombia is known for its diverse geography, which includes mountains, rainforests, coastlines, deserts and tropical savannas. The country has a total area of 1.14 million square kilometers (440,831 sq mi). The Andes mountains run along Colombia’s western border with Ecuador and Peru. These mountains are home to some of Colombia’s highest peaks including Mount Pico Cristobal Colon which stands at 5,775 meters (18,947 ft) above sea level. The Andes mountain range also contains several volcanoes including Nevado del Ruiz which last erupted in 1985 causing massive destruction in nearby cities such as Armero. Colombia’s eastern border with Venezuela is formed by the Guiana Shield which is a large plateau that rises up from sea level and stretches across much of northern South America. This region contains vast areas of tropical rainforest as well as numerous rivers and streams that flow into the Orinoco River Delta in Venezuela. The central part of Colombia is dominated by a large plain known as Los Llanos or “the Plains” which cover about one-third of Colombian territory and contain vast areas of grassland as well as numerous rivers and lakes such as Lake Maracaibo which straddles both Colombian and Venezuelan borders. Finally, there are two major coastal regions in Colombia: The Pacific Coast on its western side which includes several stunning beaches such as Playa Blanca near Cartagena; while the Caribbean Coast on its northern side features numerous islands such as San Andres Island off Nicaragua coast among other things making it ideal for eco-tourism activities such as snorkeling or kayaking among others things.
