China is a vast country with an incredibly varied landscape. It is the third largest country in the world, covering an area of 9,596,960 square kilometers. China is bordered by 14 countries and has a coastline of 18,000 kilometers. The geography of China can be divided into four major regions: the eastern plains, the central uplands, the western plateaus and mountains, and the southern hills and basins. The eastern plains make up about 40 percent of China’s total land area. This region includes vast areas of flat land that stretch from the Bohai Sea to Manchuria in northeastern China. These plains are bounded on the north by mountains and on the south by hills. The region has a warm temperate climate with abundant rainfall and lush vegetation. Major cities such as Beijing are located in this region as well as some of China’s most important industrial centers including Tianjin and Shanghai. The central uplands cover about 20 percent of China’s total land area and include vast areas of hilly terrain that stretch from Sichuan Province in southwestern China to Shandong Province in northeastern China. This region includes some of China’s highest peaks such as Mount Everest which stands at 8,848 meters above sea level. The climate here is generally colder than in other parts of China due to its higher elevation but still has abundant rainfall which makes it suitable for agriculture such as rice cultivation or tea production among other things. The western plateaus and mountains cover around 20 percent of Chinese territory with vast areas stretching from Xinjiang Autonomous Region in westernmost China to Yunnan Province near Myanmar border in southwestern China. This region includes some of Asia’s highest peaks such as K2 mountain which stands at 8,611 meters above sea level while temperatures here range between -20 – 25°C throughout most parts of the year making it ideal for winter activities such as skiing or snow-boarding among others things. Finally, there are also several islands located off Chinese coast including Taiwan Island which is home to 23 million people who speak a variety of languages including Mandarin Chinese among other things making it one of Asia’s most culturally diverse regions. Overall Chinese geography is incredibly varied with different climates throughout each region allowing for different types activities ranging from skiing on its highlands to agricultural activities on its plains while its coastal regions provide ample opportunities for eco-tourism activities such as snorkeling or kayaking among other things.
